The Rise Of Audio

Most marketers understand the value of the written word and audiovisuals, namely blogs and videos. However, a lot of people are starting to look towards audio as a third channel of communication. Right now, audio means podcasts.

People love audio because it allows them to do multiple things at once. In this day and age, time is everything. If someone can drive and listen to a podcast, then they they’re more likely to consume your content, especially with cell phone bans in most states and many countries. If someone can work and listen to audio, then that’s better than a more distracting video. Podcasts let us be entertained and informed without taking time out of our schedules.

What Are Podcasts?

Podcasts are audio files that people can download from the internet. They usually come in a series and are often automatically added to people’s devices as they become available.

You can make podcasts about anything you want.

  • Interviews
  • Lectures
  • Reviews
  • Shows
  • Commentaries
  • Documentaries

How Do I Start A Podcast?

You really only need a cell phone and a podcast making app. However, if you want to make something that sounds nice, you’ll need a microphone and audio equipment. And you’ll need someone who knows how to edit audio.

You also need good content. That means you need to add something to the conversation. As with any form of content, if you have good content and good distribution, then you’ll attract an audience.

If you want to make a podcast, you’ve got to sit down, turn on your cell phone (or microphone) and start talking. What you talk about is up to you! The efficient marketer would pick a theme related to the other content they produce, whether they talk about the same topic as a blog post they recently wrote or something they talked about in a video.

The thing with podcasts is that they can usually be longer than a video. Videos usually are kept to 1-6 minutes, but podcasts can be 10-30 minutes. This means you can go much more in-depth on the topics you already talk about. Or you can pick a completely new theme and branch out with a new audience. It all depends on how much time and content you have.

How Can You Share Podcasts?

You can make podcasts available on so many different platforms.

  • iTunes
  • Stitcher
  • SoundCloud
  • Overcast
  • iHeart Radio
  • Spotify
  • Google Play
  • TuneIn
  • Google Home

So Should You Start A Podcast?

If you have the time and skills to make a podcast, then go for it! It’s a great way to add value to your content marketing strategy and reach a segment of your audience that didn’t find you through blogs or videos. Any new efforts that you make- any additional channels that you can build your presence on- will help you.
