At Pixel506, we are grateful to have female talent in our team who inspire and deliver innovative ideas to drive our business forward. We have skillful women (and men!) working in user experience positions, graphic design, SEO/SEM, brand copywriting, ads and social media, lead development, project management, and other digital marketing roles. Truth be told; we wouldn't be where we are today without the dedication, hard work, and ideas of our (female) Pixelians.
That’s one of the reasons why we believe it’s important for younger generations to be made aware that women belong in the information, communication, and technology sector (ICT.) After all—knowledge, skills, and talent know no gender. To celebrate International Girls in ICT Day on Thursday, April 28th, 2022, we have asked some of our female Pixelians to share what they love about their careers, what challenges they have faced, and what they are most proud of.
“Each time I stand up for myself I hope to inspire other women to do the same.” - Sofia G.
Sofia G.
SEO Specialist at Pixel506
Meet our amazing Search Engine Optimization Specialist, Sofia G! She joined our team back in September 2021 and she’s been a vital part of our organization ever since. She analyzes and optimizes our client’s websites to help them rank higher on search engine result pages.
How did you become an SEO Specialist?
“I am an English major and used to work as a content writer. The company I worked for at the time wanted me to learn about SEO to optimize the content I was writing for their website. I looked for SEO courses and came across one offered by Pixel506. The course truly opened my eyes to how complex SEO really is. I have always been very curious and I love learning new things, so naturally, I became interested in all other aspects, especially technical SEO.”
What does a typical workday look like for you?
“My day starts with a meeting where my coworkers and I discuss our objectives. These meetings help me set expectations and organize my tasks. Then I blast some music and focus on meeting my goals; whether that's writing, implementing schemas, or auditing websites. Every day is different though; that's one of the things that I love about my job. It never gets boring.”
What do you like best about working at Pixel506?
“The work culture is my favorite part. I have the freedom to deliver results, my leads trust my judgment, and I always have my teammates backing me up in case I come across something challenging. I love how we are constantly encouraged to learn more and grow professionally.”
What accomplishments are you most proud of?
“I have learned so much since I started working here. I am really proud of how I managed to get into a field that I knew nothing about just one year ago. My ability to learn so much in such a short period makes me really proud of myself.”
What is one of your favorite projects you’ve worked on?
“I enjoy working with schools. I know how important education is and it makes me really happy to be able to connect schools with people.”
What challenges have you faced as a woman in the industry?
“The same issues I face in all other aspects of my life: mostly men interrupting me when I speak, and male clients not trusting my professional opinion. It is always a challenge, but each time I stand up for myself I hope to inspire other women to do the same.”
What message/advice would you give to girls who are considering joining the field?
“Do it! You'll never know if you never try. I've always heard people say "do what makes you happy" but it was difficult for me because I've always had many hobbies and interests. When it came to choosing a career, I knew I wanted to do something challenging where I could make a difference and that would give me financial freedom. That's exactly what I've found as an SEO Specialist.”
“For as long as I can remember, I’ve been interested in tech and art. My career is the perfect combination of the two.” - Sofia A.
Sofia A.
UI/UX designer at Pixel506
Meet our Designer, Sofia A. She joined the Pixel506 team in February 2021 and ever since she has surprised our clients with creative designs that exceed their expectations. Whether it's websites, animations, or videos, Sofia loves to get involved and work her magic.
How did you become an UI/UX designer?
“For as long as I can remember, I’ve been interested in technology, and I’ve always loved art. I feel that this career is the perfect combination of the two. There is a joy that comes from working as a creative professional. To me, it means I get to do what I love for a living.”
What does a typical workday look like for you?
“My typical workday consists of doing lots of research, then going to the drawing board sketching concepts. There is a lot of variety in my tasks. I design everything from emails to social media posts, to animations, landing pages, videos, illustrations, and more. Throughout the day, I communicate frequently with my clients, and I brainstorm with colleagues.”
What do you like best about working at Pixel506?
“There are many reasons why I enjoy working here, including the company culture, the work ethic, and the friendly atmosphere between colleagues. Most importantly, I cannot emphasize enough how much Pixel506 helps you grow your personal and professional development. I feel valued as a person and as a part of the team. There are many chances to experience personal growth and to gain industry knowledge.”
What accomplishments are you most proud of?
“I’m very proud of my growth as a designer, and the way that I have faced challenges along the way. With the help of my colleagues and leaders, I have gained knowledge and experience. They offer me the opportunity to be involved in discussions and propose solutions, which ultimately makes me a better designer and allows me to serve my clients in the best way possible.”
What is one of your favorite projects you’ve worked on?
“I have a lot of projects that I really enjoy working on, but perhaps the most rewarding has been the microsite and video animations that I have made for Encora/one of our clients, who are a leading provider of digital engineering services. Developing products from scratch and bringing their vision to reality was an interesting and satisfying experience.”
What challenges have you faced as a woman in the industry?
“The design industry is very competitive and exploitative, especially to women, who tend to be offered a lower salary than their male counterparts for the same job position and equal qualifications. During job interviews, I’ve been told that my salary expectations were too high, while I simply requested to be paid the standard minimum wage for someone with my education and experience. In a previous position, I realized that I was being invited to meetings to be ‘eye candy’ for male clients. Fortunately, Pixel506 came along. From the first contact to the signing of the contract, they saw my value and recognized my professional knowledge. Our design team is mostly made up of women, but both my direct team members and colleagues in other departments are helpful and friendly. It’s a relief to be part of a warm and supportive team.”
What message would you give to girls who are considering joining the field?
“Don't give up and don't settle for second best, you are worthy of more.”
“Turning a client's vision into a finished product that they are happy with is one of my favorite things.” - Any P.
Any P.
SEO/PPC Specialist at Pixel506
Any joined our team in May 2021 and has quickly made herself a valuable member. As an SEM Coordinator, any develops, executes, optimizes, and measures paid search campaigns that drive scalable growth for our clients.
How did you hear about this position?
“I came across a job post on LinkedIn, and I was immediately interested, so I applied. When I had my first interview with Roger (Roger Leiton, Digital Director at Pixel506), we had an immediate click. The more I learned about the job, the team, and the company, the more excited I felt.”
What does a typical workday look like for you?
“I start most days with a team meeting during which we set the aims and objectives of the day. Next, I scan my inbox for any urgent matters and address them by priority. I then revisit my to-do list and get to work. No two days are the same. Some days I brainstorm with Project Managers on projects that we're working on, or I create copy ideas for ads for clients. On other days I’m constantly in meetings, answering questions from clients, and going over our proposals. That’s what I like a lot about my job, there is always something to do and I never have a boring day.”
What do you like best about working at Pixel506?
“First of all, I am surrounded by great colleagues who are not only skilled and competent but also helpful and supportive. Together, we form a great team that is a pleasure to work with and be a part of. Secondly, Pixel506 provides team members with many opportunities for positive growth and learning experiences. I’m currently learning more about SEO. A few months ago, I didn't know as much about this topic as I do now. I learned quickly through self-study and the help of colleagues who share their knowledge and best practices.”
What accomplishments are you most proud of?
“I'm most proud of becoming knowledgeable in SEO, Analytics, and Data Studio. When I first started working here, I wasn’t as familiar with website performance measures. It was a challenge to learn all the technical terms and implement the different features that these tools offer. Luckily, I was welcomed into a skilled and experienced team who taught me a lot in a relatively short period of time. I still learn from my teammates each day.”
What is one of your favorite projects you’ve worked on?
“So far, one of my favorite projects was when I had the chance to build out a proposal for a new client from scratch. I was involved with the project from start to finish, which involved getting to know the client, understanding their needs, sharing suggestions and ideas, and collaborating and working together. It was really rewarding to see the campaign grow every day. After all that work, and it was a lot of work, seeing the finished product was just an amazing experience. Turning a client's vision into a reality that they are happy with is one of my favorite things.”
What challenges have you faced as a woman in the industry?
“Many people are used to seeing women work in digital advertising, but they often assume that we’re account managers or in client relationship roles. They are often surprised when they realize there is a female professional responsible for data analysis or campaign implementation. The biggest challenge for me is to be perceived as someone who is skilled and knowledgeable in data analytics, especially in a world where most of the analytics positions are filled by men.”
What message would you give to girls who are considering joining the field?
“Just do it! Don't think about it too much, just follow your gut. This is a constantly evolving world, and you are just as capable to stay ahead of the curve as anyone else. There will always be new challenges, but that is what makes this industry so unique. Never stop learning, always be hungry to learn more and to discover new ways to do things.”
